My Alimentary Adventure: Day 1
Today I stepped off onto a new journey to heal my digestive tract. I’ve been reading a lot lately about the links between leaky gut, an unbalanced microbiome, and autoimmune disease. So guess what? I decided to test these connections on myself!
I have been living with rheumatoid arthritis as an adult for nearly 10 years (my juvenile RA went into remission when I was four-years-old). During that time, I have tried a wide variety of lifestyle choices from what I ate to what supplements I used, from my sleep schedule to my exercise decisions, and so on. There have been few days where I have felt 100 percent “okay.” I do know, however, that some of my best days have been during times when I was gluten-free, doing yoga daily, and getting enough sleep. I have tried going Paleo, but I still have some digestive trouble. Additionally, I have spent the past two years over-stressed from graduate school and dealing with sleep problems. I’ve been taking medications to help me function during the day because I have been so fatigued, and then I have had great trouble getting to sleep at night. All signs that something is wrong.
So here’s my plan:
Step 1: Send a sample to the American Gut Project to learn more about my microbiome.
Step 2: Begin following a strict autoimmune protocol (AIP) diet, attend two yoga classes per week, and be sure to drink at least 64oz of water a day for three months.
Step 3: Sign up for the Healthy Hormones Group Progam from Zesty Ginger to test and learn more about my hormones.
Step 4: At the end of three months, test everything again.
Step 5: Blog about it!
I know it can be difficult to stick to a lifestyle change plan, so writing these posts is my way of creating some external accountability. I also hope that following my journey may help others decide to start their own journey toward full health. Not to mention, it will be fantastic to get some first-hand evidence on how major lifestyle changes like this one can affect my health. So here we go!
March 1, 2017
Today I ate:
- Breakfast – cherry lime gelatin gummies based on a recipe in The Autoimmune Wellness Handbook, bacon, half a banana (I woke up late)
- Lunch – turmeric ginger tea with honey, green leaf lettuce, beef and beef liver meatballs, green olives, pickled radishes, and an AIP Greek dressing from The Healing Kitchen
- Dinner – avocado, cucumber, and grilled shrimp with olive oil and red wine vinegar
- Dessert – more gummies (so good!)
Today I exercised:
- Walked to the train station and across campus (several blocks)
- Mild physical labor
Today I felt: Great!
I was tired this morning, but perked up by the afternoon. I was very productive for five hours while at work, and took some time to relax with a crossword when I got home. On Wednesdays I am part of a karaoke league tournament, and tonight my team won! Not only that, but I received so many compliments on my solo. It was all-in-all a fantastic day.
